India vs US Hiring Cost for Engineers 2026: Full Breakdown

A senior software engineer you would pay about US$161,000 loaded in the US costs about US$47,400 a year all-in employed in Bengaluru through an Employer of Record — salary, Indian employer contributions and the EOR fee included. That is a saving of roughly US$114,000 per hire, or 71%, at the same seniority.
The gap holds across every engineering level and widens in dollar terms as you go up the band. Below is the full working: the three-level comparison, a line-by-line breakdown of one senior hire, what US employer payroll taxes and health insurance actually add on top of base, and the non-cost differences — holidays, leave and time-zone overlap — that decide whether the saving survives contact with a real team.
SynkPay employs people in India only. The US figures here are comparison context, not a service we provide — we don't employ, pay or run compliance for staff based in the US.
How much cheaper is an engineer in India than in the US?
Role | India salary | US base | US loaded | Bengaluru loaded (all-in) | Saved per hire |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Mid-level engineer (3–5 yrs) | ₹15–25 lakh | US$109,250 | ~US$125,800 | US$20,532–US$31,263 | ~US$94,500–US$105,200 (75–84%) |
Senior engineer (6–10 yrs) | ₹30–50 lakh | US$142,000 | ~US$161,000 | US$36,629–US$58,092 | ~US$102,900–US$124,400 (64–77%) |
Staff / Tech Lead (10+ yrs) | ₹50–75 lakh | US$175,500 | ~US$197,100 | US$58,092–US$84,921 | ~US$112,200–US$139,000 (57–71%) |
The US column is base salary plus employer Social Security and Medicare, plus federal and state unemployment tax, plus employer-paid health insurance. The India column is the rupee salary plus the employer contributions Indian law requires plus SynkPay's flat US$349 per employee per month. Recruitment fees, equity and bonuses are excluded on both sides.
Two things worth reading off that table. First, the percentage saving narrows as seniority rises — 75–84% at mid-level against 57–71% at staff level — because Indian senior salaries have moved faster than Indian mid-level salaries. Second, the dollar saving does the opposite: roughly US$100,000 at mid-level against roughly US$125,000 at staff level. If you are choosing one role to move, the senior end of your org chart frees more cash.

A note on which US salary you should be comparing against
The US bands above are national figures. If you are hiring in the Bay Area or New York, your real number is higher — and the honest position is that we could not source a base-salary-only figure for those metros from a dataset we are willing to name. What is available is self-reported total compensation, which bundles equity and bonus and skews toward large public tech companies: Levels.fyi puts the median at US$293,000 in the SF Bay Area, US$255,000 in greater Seattle and US$196,948 in the New York City area as of 18 September 2026, with an NYC 25th percentile of US$140,000.
Those are not comparable to the base-plus-statutory math in the table — an Indian engineer on an EOR contract has no equity line — so we have kept them out of it. Read them as evidence that the national table understates the gap for a Bay Area or New York employer, not as a second set of figures to subtract from.
Worked example: a senior engineer on ₹40 lakh in Karnataka
₹40 lakh a year is the mid-point of the senior band and the salary our US clients most often land on for a 6–10 year engineer in Bengaluru. Here is the whole monthly invoice.
Line | Per month |
|---|---|
Gross salary (₹40,00,000 a year, ₹3,33,333 a month) | US$3,491 |
Employer Provident Fund | US$19 |
PF administration charge and EDLI | US$2 |
Gratuity accrual | US$84 |
Employer liability insurance | US$2 |
Employees' State Insurance | US$0 |
Employer statutory total | US$106 |
SynkPay EOR fee (fixed) | US$349 |
Total | US$3,947 |
That is about US$47,400 a year, on one US-dollar invoice at the start of each month. No salary deposit, no setup fee, and no VAT or GST added — the invoice is issued from SynkPay's own Indian entity, which we have operated since 2016.
Notice how small the Indian statutory line is: US$106 a month, about 3% of salary. Employer Provident Fund is 12% of basic pay but is applied against a wage cap of ₹15,000 a month, so the employer contribution tops out at ₹1,800 a month and becomes a rounding error at a senior salary. The gratuity accrual is the largest remaining component. Employees' State Insurance does not apply here because the salary sits well above the ESI wage ceiling.

The same seniority in the US
A US base salary for a mid-experience software engineer is US$142,000 on Robert Half's 2026 Salary Guide — their "mid" percentile, defined as a candidate with moderate experience who meets most requirements. The Bureau of Labor Statistics corroborates it independently: the median annual wage for software developers was US$135,980 in May 2025, against a mean of US$148,100 across 1,687,890 people. On top of that base a US employer pays:
Social Security — 6.2% employer-side, on wages up to the 2026 contribution and benefit base of US$184,500. On a US$142,000 salary that is US$8,804, and because the base is well above most engineering salaries it behaves like a flat 6.2% until you get into staff-plus territory.
Medicare — 1.45% employer-side, uncapped. US$2,059 on the same salary. There is an Additional Medicare Tax of 0.9% above US$200,000, but that is withheld from the employee, not matched by the employer.
FUTA — 6.0% on the first US$7,000 of wages, reduced by a credit of up to 5.4% where state unemployment tax is paid in full and on time, giving a net 0.6%, or US$42 a year per employee.
State unemployment (SUTA) — small but real. California's 2026 new-employer UI rate is 3.4% on a US$7,000 per-employee wage base (US$238), plus a 0.1% Employment Training Tax on the same base (US$7). Both the rate and the wage base differ by state and by your claims history.
Employer-paid health insurance — the big one. KFF's 2025 Employer Health Benefits Survey puts the average annual premium at US$9,325 for single coverage and US$26,993 for family coverage, with covered workers contributing US$1,440 and US$6,850 respectively. That leaves the employer paying roughly US$7,885 for single coverage and US$20,143 for family — per employee, per year, before any of your other benefits.
Together that is roughly 13–15% on top of base at these salary levels — lower in percentage terms than most people expect, precisely because the Social Security wage base, the FUTA wage base and the health premium are all fixed amounts that stop scaling once the salary is high enough. In absolute terms it is about US$19,000 a year on a US$142,000 engineer, landing at about US$161,000 loaded.
Two things deliberately left out, both of which would push the US side higher: state-mandated workers' compensation, and state paid-leave programmes such as California SDI, New York Paid Family Leave and Washington's Cares Fund.

What the cost comparison leaves out
The invoice is only part of the decision. Three operational differences matter more than founders expect.
Public holidays
India observes 10–12 public holidays a year; the US has 11 federal holidays, though private-sector employers are not required to observe any of them and most observe six to nine. The count is close, but the dates barely overlap. Plan around the major Indian festivals — Diwali, Holi, Eid, and the regional new years — rather than assuming a US calendar. A shared team calendar agreed at the start of the engagement removes almost all the friction here.
Annual leave
18–24 paid days a year is the standard entitlement for an Indian professional hire. The US has no federal statutory paid annual leave at all — the Fair Labor Standards Act does not require payment for time not worked — so a typical US startup's 10–15 days of PTO is a benefit decision, not a legal floor. India's entitlement is the higher of the two, and it is a legal one. On the India side, sick leave and casual leave are typically carved out of that allowance rather than added to it. Every SynkPay contract states the exact entitlement up front.
Working-hour overlap
This is the real trade-off for US companies, and it is worth being blunt about it. India is 9½ hours ahead of New York (10½ in winter) and 12½ hours ahead of San Francisco (13½ in winter). On a standard India day there is effectively no overlap with a US working day at all — which is why almost every US client sets a shifted India schedule in the employment contract from day one.
India shift | Overlap with New York 09:00–17:30 | Overlap with San Francisco 09:00–17:30 |
|---|---|---|
Standard 09:30–18:30 IST | none | none |
Afternoon 14:00–23:00 IST | about 4.5 hours | about 1.5 hours |
US-hours 17:30–02:30 IST | about 8 hours | about 4 hours |
Late 18:30–03:30 IST | about 8 hours | about 6 hours |
An afternoon shift gets an East Coast team a solid half-day of live overlap. A West Coast team needs a later India start to get past two hours. Agree the shift in the employment contract up front rather than negotiating it after the hire — it is a term of employment in India, not an informal arrangement, and retrofitting it is the single most common reason a US–India engineering pairing goes wrong.
What the saving buys at different stages
Pre-seed and seed. Moving two senior engineering roles to India frees roughly US$228,000 a year against the US equivalents. At typical early-stage burn that is months of additional runway, not a line-item optimisation.
Series A. A five-engineer India team built at the senior band saves on the order of US$570,000 a year against the same five hires in the US — and considerably more against Bay Area or New York offers. That usually funds the next two hires plus a marketing budget.
Scaling. Past a certain team size, setting up your own Indian entity starts to compete commercially with ongoing EOR fees. SynkPay can run the transition from EOR to direct employment under your own entity when you get there — and until then, the Employer of Record in India route carries all the compliance on our entity rather than yours.
The quality question
The most common objection from US founders: "are the engineers as good?"
The honest answer is that the Indian talent pool at mid-to-senior level is deep — Google, Microsoft, Amazon and a long list of US-headquartered companies all run significant India engineering operations, and Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune supply most of it. At the right salary level, quality is not the constraint.
Sourcing is. Productivity problems on India hires almost always trace to one of three things: weak screening, no defined daily overlap with the US team, or unclear scope from the founder — none of which are India-specific. Our IT recruitment service sources and technically screens engineers across Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai and Chennai at 12% of annual salary with a 90-day replacement guarantee. It is a separate service, priced separately from the EOR fee — not bundled into it.
For a remote hire you have never met in person, background verification covering employment history, identity and education is a one-time US$300 add-on.
The next step if you have decided on India
If the numbers work and you want the mechanics — USD invoicing, what our entity carries, how onboarding runs in one business day — that is on our page for US companies: employ someone in India from the US, without setting up an Indian entity.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost a US company to employ an engineer in India?
For a senior engineer on ₹40 lakh a year in Karnataka, about US$3,947 a month — US$3,491 salary, US$106 in employer statutory costs, and SynkPay's flat US$349 fee. That is roughly US$47,400 a year all-in. A mid-level engineer on ₹15–25 lakh lands at US$20,532–US$31,263 a year, and a staff engineer or tech lead at ₹50–75 lakh at US$58,092–US$84,921.
Does the India figure include the EOR fee, or is that on top?
It is included. Every India figure in this article is salary plus Indian employer contributions plus SynkPay's US$349 per employee per month. The fee covers the compliance overhead — payroll processing, Provident Fund filing and TDS are not billed separately.
Is sales tax, VAT or GST added to the invoice?
No. The US$349 is a flat price with no setup fee, no tiers and no country surcharges, and the invoice is issued from our Indian entity with no VAT or GST added. Your employee is paid in rupees, so the dollar value of their salary moves with the exchange rate even though the fee does not.
Why is there no EOR fee on the US side?
Because a US company hiring in the US employs through its own entity and needs no EOR. The US column is employer payroll taxes and health insurance only. The India column carries the EOR fee because most US companies hiring in India have no Indian entity and use SynkPay as the legal employer.
Does SynkPay handle US payroll or compliance?
No. We employ people in India only, through our own Indian entity. We do not employ, pay or run compliance for anyone based in the US — the US numbers here exist so you can compare the two options, not because we provide the US side.
Why are the Indian employer contributions so low compared with US payroll taxes and health insurance?
Employer Social Security and Medicare alone come to 7.65% of salary, and employer-paid health insurance adds roughly US$7,900 a year for single coverage on KFF's 2025 averages. Employer Provident Fund in India is 12% of basic pay but is applied against a wage cap of ₹15,000 a month, so the employer contribution tops out at ₹1,800 a month — and healthcare is not an employer-funded line in the same way. At ₹40 lakh the whole Indian statutory load is about 3% of salary, against roughly 13–15% in the US.
Should I be comparing against Bay Area salaries instead of national ones?
If that is where you would otherwise hire, yes — and the gap gets larger, not smaller. We have kept metro figures out of the main table because the available metro data is self-reported total compensation including equity, which is not comparable to the base-plus-statutory math used here. Treat the national table as the conservative version of the comparison.
Do we owe Indian payroll tax or need an Indian bank account?
No to both. When you hire through an EOR, SynkPay is the Indian employer and carries the Indian obligations. You pay one US-dollar invoice from the US; we pay your employee in rupees into their Indian bank account. You do not transfer money into India or deal with RBI foreign-exchange rules yourself.
Is there a deposit or a setup fee?
No. There is no salary deposit and no setup fee, and the engagement runs month to month. We invoice at the start of the month and pay the employee at the end of it — a standard payroll cycle.
What is the notice period if we end the engagement?
One month, standardised across every SynkPay contract. We handle offboarding, including the final pay calculation and the statutory documentation.
Who owns the code our India engineer writes?
Your company. Every SynkPay employment contract assigns the employee's work product to you and includes confidentiality, trade-secret, non-solicitation and return-of-materials provisions, drafted under Indian law. These are standard in every contract, not a premium tier — which matters when a US acquirer or lead investor runs IP diligence on your codebase.
What exchange rate are these figures based on?
INR 95.47 per USD, as of 27 August 2026. The US$349 fee is fixed and does not move with the rate; your employee is paid in rupees, so the dollar value of their salary does.
